To celebrate the Oasis member’s birthday, we look back at his early origins.

On the 27th of August, 2024, fans were given the news they’d been waiting for after nearly 16 years. Oasis were reunited and ready to embark on a new tour. It was one of the biggest series of gigs in history and the comeback isn’t over yet.

The 29th of May marks Noel Gallagher’s birthday and it feels appropriate to look at the journey of the singer and songwriter, before he embarks on the next chapter of his career. Many won’t know that before the chart-topping records and arena sellouts, Gallagher worked in the construction industry.

Noel Gallagher’s Early Career

Thomas Gallagher, father to Liam and Noel, owned a concrete construction business. It seemed only fitting that his sons would go into the same line of work. While Liam had a brief stint on site, Noel would spend a good portion of his early career as a labourer and joiner.

Gallagher not only worked for his father’s business but also collaborated with other civil engineering firms across Manchester. However, the Gallagher brothers had a strained relationship with their father and would regularly have arguments on site, with Noel working till 9 PM almost daily. Eventually Noel would resign from his role, finding employment elsewhere.

Writing Songs On Site

Noel Gallagher would then take on a gig working for a company sub-contracted by British Gas. While it may have paid well enough, the job would turn out to be a true blessing in disguise. Gallagher was injured on site, when a steel cap from a gas pipe crushed his foot.

With Gallagher unable to work, he began to write songs, to pass the time. He was moved to a storeroom role, where he was not required to undertake any physical labour, giving him a chance to heal. But with this change of pace, Gallagher’s mind began to wander. That’s when some of Oasis’ greatest hits were first thought up. Without Noel’s time in construction, perhaps the band never would have hit the heights that it has today.
