AUDIO NEWS: Builders are unprepared for Making Tax Digital and 71% of tradespeople keep tools in their van

Builders are unprepared for Making Tax Digital reforms, 71% of tradespeople keep tools in their van despite the threat of tool theft and Josh Padley named youth ambassador

Many tradespeople are unprepared for the government’s Making Tax Digital reforms, claims research from Tradesman Saver.

A survey by the insurer found that 61% of sole traders manage their accounts themselves, while a fifth rely on a partner or spouse to handle their finances. Only one in five use an account or bookkeeper.

The shift to Making Tax Digital will mean trade businesses that exceed a £50,000 revenue threshold will need to submit quarterly tax updates, adding further ‘financial headaches’ at a time when many are struggling with rising costs.

Over 70% of tradespeople keep tools in their van overnight, despite the threat of tool theft.

The poll by Markel Direct also found that 41% of trades use their van as the main storage area for tools.

However, the survey did hint at an increased investment in van security, with 79% of respondents claiming they had an alarm fitted in their vehicle.
