Further builder regulation could help boost apprenticeship numbers, claims the head of the Federation of Master Builders.
CEO Brian Berry said industry regulation would show new joiners career progression and reassure them that their health and safety would be protected.
Berry suggested that any potential regulator could collect data on all contractors, including their finances, membership of professional organisations and professional indemnity insurance.

A gang of rogue roofers that conned more than £1 million from victims in the North East, Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire have been jailed.
The 23 people in the gang were sentenced to a combined 64 years.
The gang repeatedly targeted vulnerable people and pressured them into agreeing to unnecessary repairs, with costs escalating into the tens of thousands of pounds.
Trading Standards also uncovered an extensive money laundering network.
