AUDIO NEWS: Tool theft expected to accelerate in October, and 91% of tradespeople fielding energy saving enquiries

Tool theft and site vandalism expected to accelerate as clocks go back, construction output falls at its slowest rate since January, and 91% of tradespeople answer energy saving enquiries from clients

Tool theft and vandalism on building sites are expected to accelerate over the coming weeks as evenings get darker and the clocks move back an hour.

Police data collected by Direct Line Business Insurance suggests that reports of tool theft are 46% higher in October than in April — traditionally the lowest month for tool theft.

A poll by the Chartered Institute of Building estimated that site vandalism and the theft of tools and materials cost over £800 million a year.

Insurers are urging tradespeople and site managers to review the security of vans, secure lock-ups, and building sites before the end of the month.

Construction output fell at its slowest rate since January — that’s according to a survey of construction purchasing managers.

Overall, S&P Global’s index climbed by two points in September.

Despite the depressed market, 31% of respondents expected business activity to rise going forward, while a fifth predicted the market would decline.

Over 90% of tradespeople have fielded customer enquiries about energy saving in the last year, claims a survey from Screwfix.

Market uncertainty and forthcoming changes to the energy price cap are pushing more homeowners to explore cost-saving options.

However, four in ten trades reported that upfront costs were the biggest barrier to adoption.
