AUDIO NEWS: 6,500 construction firms in critical financial distress and applications for BUS surge

Over 6,500 building firms in critical financial distress, applications to Boiler Upgrade Scheme surge, and football coach John McGlynn used to make more as a plumber

Over 6,500 construction firms were in critical financial distress at the end of Q3.

The report from BTG also found that nearly 110,000 firms faced significant money issues last quarter due to soaring costs, supply chain issues, and broader economic uncertainty.

The construction industry has the second-highest number of businesses in financial distress of any sector.

Despite the gloomy outlook, the number of construction firms in critical distress was down 11% from Q3 2025.

Applications for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) surged to nearly 10,000 in September.

The jump in interest was attributed to growing interest from off-grid households in the £9,000 grant and narrowing running costs between electric and gas.

The figures were published after last Wednesday’s budget, which effectively capped the Boiler Upgrade Scheme moving forward.

A spokesperson for Nesta said that households were now racing the clock to apply while funds were available.

John McGlynn, the manager of Scottish Premiership side Falkirk, has revealed he made more as a plumber than when he went into full time coaching with Hearts.

The 64-year-old spent around 10 years with Hearts before stints with Raith Rovers and Livingston, before joining his current club in 2022.

Last Sunday, Falkirk beat Celtic for the first time in 22 years.
