AUDIO NEWS: 4% increase to minimum wage won't help the trades, and thieves raid sites for dumper trucks

4% increase to the minimum wage will make it harder for builders to hire and train staff, thieves hit six sites in Scotland in four days, and Barrett Homes donates hi-vis vests to local school

The 4% minimum wage increase will make it harder for many small builders and trade firms to hire, train, and retain staff, particularly apprentices.

For many small firms, already struggling with tight margins, the additional cost will be difficult to absorb, the FMB warned.

The trade body said the government needs to avoid a situation where ‘well intentioned’ pay policies reduce the capacity of SMEs to grow.

In more positive budget news for the construction sector, the Chancellor extended the fuel duty freeze and the Boiler Upgrade Scheme escaped without being cut.

The spokesperson was “uncertain” whether the budget would drive bigger change in the industry.

Six plant machinery and tool theft incidents have taken place across Ayrshire in just four days.

The thieves mainly targeted dumper trucks of various configurations as they raided a series of building sites and farms.

The police believe the incidents are connected and are appealing to the public for information that might help.

Barrett Homes in Manchester has donated 35 hi-vis vests to a local primary school to help kids stay safe on their journey to and from school.

The housebuilder’s Bright Journey’s campaign aims to provide 2,000 pupils across the country with equipment to remain visible on their school commutes.
