AUDIO NEWS: 53% of plumbers expect to hire an apprentice and Band of Builders finishes two projects

Fewer plumbing firms expect to recruit apprentices, Band of Builders completes two projects simultaneously, and NFB supports heritage skills

Barely half of plumbing and heating businesses in Scotland expect to recruit an apprentice in the next three years — that’s according to research from SNIPEF.

The report found that while support for training the next generation remained strong, many firms were struggling to absorb the cost.

The trade body warned that declining employer participation could weaken a vitally important workforce needed to protect public health, maintain safe homes and deliver low-carbon heating.

Rising wages, over 1,000 hours of mandatory college attendance and limited productivity were all listed as discouraging apprentice recruitment.

SNIPEF estimated that employing one apprentice for four years can cost over £82,000.

Band of Builders has completed two home renovation projects, 350 miles apart.

The construction charity completed a half-finished home extension for builder Robert Sargent, whose son Henry has Burkitt lymphoma.

While in Glasgow, volunteers fitted a walk-in shower for 82-year-old former brickie and landscaper, Archie, who is suffering from Parkinson’s Disease.

In total, more than 60 volunteers worked across both projects.

The National Federation of Builders has been out promoting heritage skills.

The trade body appeared at the West Midlands Heritage fair to inspire future tradespeople.

An NFB spokesperson said protecting our built heritage means investing in skills and people.
