GTA VI recreates some iconic landmarks.
Grand Theft Auto VI will finally be released on the 19th of November, 2026, after years of delays. It’s fair to say that the game is one of the most highly anticipated of all time. Not only because of the success of the previous entry but also because of the quality of the latest trailers.
GTA V was set in Los Santos and the surrounding state of San Andreas. The fictional city was modelled after Los Angeles, with Blaine County and North Yankton representing Southern California and North Dakota, respectively. However, GTA VI will be expanding its horizons as it drives towards new territory.
GTA VI’s New Locations
The latest Grand Theft Auto title will officially be set in Leonida. This is a fictional state and the first time that developers Rockstar Games will be including the location in this series. Rockstar Games has a habit of building fake worlds based on real-life places and previously did the same with Red Dead Redemption 2.
It is Vice City that will take a leading role here, a GTA icon that has appeared in multiple other franchise entries. Other major locations include tropical islands called the Leonida Keys, swamp territory known as the Grass Rivers, a coastal town called Port Gellhorn, an agricultural hub named Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga National Park.
What Are GTA VI’s Locations Based On?
As many might have already predicted, Leonida is actually based on the state of Florida. Meanwhile, Vice City is GTA’s version of Miami, while the Leonide Keys represent the Florida Keys. GTA IV has also been influenced by the Everglades and national parks like Biscayne.
Being able to map out Florida and create a fictionalised version of the state is one thing. But to make Vice City truly believable, Rockstar Games decided to use some of Miami’s famous structures to its advantage.
Vice City boasts a recreation of the Venetian Causeway, for example, the 1926 historic bridge, which received a 2026 makeover. The fictional city has also copied Miami’s famous art deco hotels, including The Colony Hotel, The Clevelander Hotel, The Hotel Victor and The Pelican Miami Beach, complete with the classic neon colours.
Even the 47-story Miami Tower skyscraper can be seen on the Vice City skyline, repurposed as Vice City Tower. The crew that initially worked on many of these landmarks would never have guessed that their constructions would one day be immortalised in one of the biggest gaming franchises of all time.
