The Cartoon Character Who Worked In Construction

The 30th of September marks the anniversary of when The Flintstones first aired, back in 1960. 2026 marks 66 years since the classic cartoon cemented itself in television history. Most will remember The Flintstones for its iconic theme tune and its prehistoric humour. 

However, The Flintstones has an unusual connection to the construction industry too. Because when the Hanna-Barbera family were not getting themselves into absurd situations, some of them were actually working on site! 

The Rockhead and Quarry Cave Construction Company

Go back to the early episodes of The Flintstones, and you’ll quickly learn all about Fred Flintstone and Barney Rubble’s trade. They worked for the Rockhead and Quarry Cave Construction Company, an organisation owned and run by Mr Slate. 

However, the company would go through a transformation and would later be called the Slate Rock and Gravel Company for the remainder of the show. The construction group has been a stalwart of The Flintstones and the backdrop to so many of Fred and Barney’s adventures. 

Unusual Career Paths

Interestingly, Fred and Barney did not take on traditional roles on site. Since this is a world where dinosaurs and man lived side-by-side, those incredible beasts were involved in the construction process. Fred and Barney were therefore responsible for guiding their working companions as bronto-crane operators. 

Each would use a live brontosaurus as a crane, lifting heavy objects and moving rubble from one place to the next. While we never really find out what’s being built with all that gravel they are digging up, it seems that the duo are a critical part of the operation and vital to prehistoric society. 

With a new live-action interpretation of The Flintstones in the works, fans may be seeing the return of this classic construction company very soon!
