The Best Guinness World Records In Construction

The Guinness World Records turn 70 this year!

The 27th of August marks the anniversary of the Guinness World Records. In 2026, it will be turning 70 years old! Over those decades, the brand has sold millions of annuals and overseen some truly bizarre challenges. 

Of course, tradies didn’t want to be left out and so a lot of unbelievable records were also broken in the construction field. These are some of the most bizarre, impressive and best that builders had to offer. 

Heaviest Building 

The world’s heaviest building is the Palace of the Parliament in Bucharest, Romania. Weighing around 4.1 million tonnes, it was built between 1984 and 1997 and is made from marble, steel and bronze. No wonder it's so heavy!

Tallest Building 

Officially opening in 2010, the tallest building in the world is located in Dubai. The Burj Khalifa is a whopping 828 metres tall, with 163 floors and a lift that runs for 504 metres. It has since become a famous tourist attraction and towers over neighbouring structures. 

Heaviest Stack Of Bricks Balance On Head 

It was in 1997 that British-born John Evans balanced 101 bricks on his head. Weighing a total of 188.7 kilograms, the strongman was able to hold the weight for 10 seconds at the old BBC television centre. 

Most Bricks Laid In An Hour 

How many bricks could you lay in an hour? Well, British bricklayer Charlie Collison achieved the impossible in 2026 by laying down 1,065 bricks. Not only did he beat the previous record of 872 bricks, but he also set an incredible new speed of 17.75 bricks per minute.

Longest Wheelbarrow Push

Pushing a wheelbarrow might seem simple enough, but try walking for almost 3 years with one! Australian Bob Hanley walked 9,000 miles between 1975 and 1978 while pushing a wheelbarrow. Travelling across Australia, he finished in the beautiful Sydney, where it all began. 

The Spirit Level Balance 

The serial record-breaker David Rush, of the United States, decided to take on another challenge. He placed 100 spirit levels on his chin at the same time and perfectly balanced them. Holding them there for 10 seconds, the feat was achieved in 2021 and still hasn’t been beaten.
