Darts Players Who Work In Construction

Premier League Darts returns, but how many competitors have previously been in the construction industry?

BetMGM Premier League Darts returns to the O2 on the 28th of May and it’s promising to be a tough contest. While the atmosphere will no doubt be electric, we’re not focused on bullseyes and trebles, but rather, what industries the players previously worked in.

In fact, some legendary players from over the years have been in the construction industry. Here are some of the most notable ones.

Charlie Manby

Competing in the Professional Darts Corporation, Charlie Manby is on the rise. However, the Huddersfield native is a bricklayer by trade before gaining newfound attention in the sport. He briefly returned to construction before eventually becoming a full-time player.

Rob Cross

Ranked as the world number two in 2018 and 2019, Rob Cross is one of Britain’s best. Before turning professional, he was an electrician, hence the name ‘Voltage.’ He would play darts in local pubs, in-between jobs.

Cameron Menzies

A winner of two Players Championship titles, Cameron Menzies, hailing from Scotland, is a former full-time plumber. He famously balanced his two careers for some time before finding enough success to go pro.

Bobby George

Known as one of darts’ biggest personalities, Bobby George may have become a mainstay of television coverage around the sport, but the former darts player was a builder. He took up darts at the age of 30, but had previously even helped to tunnel for the Victoria Line.

Mervyn King

Mervyn King became the world number four darts player, but when it came time to start stepping back from the sport, ‘The King’ had a different plan. He founded a construction company with a friend after spending some time as a delivery driver.

Luke Humphries

Luke Humphries

The previous world number one, Luke Humphries, might have many accolades to his name, but he never would have reached that height had he not given up his day job as a roofer. He worked in Berkshire for 6 years before retiring.

Phil Taylor

Phil Taylor

Phil Taylor was ‘The Power’ to darts fans and is widely considered one of the greatest to ever do it. However, in retirement, that nickname changed to ‘The Power Drill’ as Taylor swapped his darts for tools and began a new life in construction, building his own pub in the process.
