Bricklayer Andy Mahoney talks about the current experience in the industry, rates of pay, working conditions on-site in 2025, and going on strikes
Ash Mahoney, host of the Bricklaying Show, is joined by his father, Andy Mahoney, a well-respected and experienced brickie, to discuss rates and the possibility of going on strike.
Andy argues that bricklayers are not getting paid enough in the UK. "The builders need to know that laying each brick takes time and must be done correctly."
Andy says the £63 per brick rate is "out of date. "I'm getting to the point now where I'm thinking of another career, even though I have only a few years left of working. I work hard all day and take home next to nothing, and it's not right," he retorts.
He further claims that he is earning less money now than ever. "It's disgusting. We need to get paid adequately. Since the pandemic, house prices have gone through the roof. Give us a decent pay rise," he demands.
There's news that bricklayers plan to take a week off to strike against low wages. Andy notes that he would back the strikes 100% and hopes it is at the 'top out' stages of builds. "Because across the country, we deserve to be treated better."
Many bricklayers are currently unemployed, and considering the government's house-building targets, he argues that brickies shouldn't be out of work.
