Average earnings for self employed tradespeople hit an all-time high, electrician named Screwfix's Top Tradesperson, and convictions for illegal gas work jumps in 2025
Average earnings for self employed tradespeople hit £1,110 per week in August — that’s according to data from Hudson Contract.
The industry average was an all-time high, with pay packets rising nearly 5% when compared with last year.
Plumbers enjoyed the biggest increase, with rates jumping by over 10%.
Joiners and steel and timber contractors also saw a healthy jump in pay.
A spokesperson for the payroll firm said day rates remained strong not because the market was booming, but due to structural factors which reduced the supply of skilled labour.

Neil Claxton has been crowned Screwfix’s Top Tradesperson.
The electrician from Ayr in Scotland impressed the judges with his commitment to the highest standards of work, while supporting apprentices and giving back to his local community.
The sparkie was one of 10 finalists from around the country who made it to the final at Screwfix Live last weekend.
Claxton also won a £20,000 prize bundle, made up of tech, training and tools.

The number of rogue traders convicted of carrying out illegal gas work has risen sharply in the last year.
HSE figures released as part of Gas Safety Week show 17 people were convicted in 2025, up from just 4 the year before.
