AUDIO NEWS: Tradespeople feel stressed in the run-up to Christmas and FMB welcomes plan to dump landfill tax

Nearly 40% of tradespeople admit to feeling stressed by the Christmas rush, FMB calls budget a big win and plans for the UK's tallest wood-framed building unveiled

The rush to complete work before Christmas is taking its toll on the trade’s mental health.

In a survey by Jackson Woodturners’, nearly 40% of tradespeople admitted to feeling more stressed in the run-up to the festive period, while over a quarter said they suffered a higher level of burnout.

Over a quarter of respondents also claimed they felt pressure to make more money for Christmas.

More broadly, the survey identified that two thirds of tradespeople battled the symptoms of depression in the last year.

The Federation of Master Builders has welcomed measures introduced in last week’s budget.

On Wednesday, the chancellor Rachel Reeves unveiled a £48 million investment in planning and introduced free apprenticeship training for under-25s in small businesses.

To the relief of the trade body, the government also dropped plans for a landfill tax.

Brian Berry, chief executive of the FMB described the budget as a big win for small builders, “saving them thousands on new build costs”.

Plans were unveiled last week for the UK’s largest, all timber-framed office building.

McLaren Construction has been appointed the main contractor for the nine-storey, £57 million build.

Due for completion in 2028, the Xylo building in Clerkenwell will boast a vaulted lobby, office space, a rooftop garden and five landscaped terraces.
