Tradespeople are switching from vans to cars to secure tools, landscapers crowned the fittest trade and plumbers see jump in demand for bathroom renovation work
Over a third of tradespeople have dumped their van and started using a car to hide their equipment from thieves — that’s according to research from Direct Line Business Insurance.
A further 23% of tradies admitted they were thinking of making the switch, while 16% said they wanted to change to a car, but couldn’t fit their tools in the boot.
With nearly half of reported tool thefts in 2024 happening from vans, 48% of tradespeople said they had turned down work if they were unable to park their van where they could see it.

Landscapers have been crowned the fittest trade, in research from Citroen.
The van manufacturer polled 1,000 tradespeople on a host of factors, including the amount of heavy lifting they did, combined with the number of daily steps, diet and exercise outside work.
Plumbers and carpenters came second on third on the list.

Over a third of plumbers said they’d seen a jump in demand for bathroom renovation work, claims research from City Plumbing.
A quarter of those surveyed also reported an increase in repair work.
Although improving the style of a bathroom remained important, 42% of installers said the main motivator behind renovation work was changing bathrooms to better suit changing mobility needs or lifestyle changes.
