
Tool theft increases by 9% between 2023 and 2024, a Scottish plumber heads to France to fix his hip rather than wait for the NHS and UK homes encouraged to recycle paint
Tool theft cost tradespeople £3.5 billion in 2024 – that’s according to a survey from Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles.
In the survey of 1,000 van drivers, 28% said they had been a victim of tool thieves in the last year. An increase of 9% on 2023 figures.
The poll also claimed that the value of stolen tools rose by over 40%, to an average of slightly over £2,400.
The jump in tool theft incidents led to more missed work. On average tradespeople took 3.97% days off work due to tool theft.

A Scottish plumber working for the NHS, has had to go to France to fix his arthritic hip.
Rather than wait for up to three years for an op with the National Health Service, Tony Daley decided to use the money he had saved for a dream holiday to Alaska, on getting the surgery done aboard.
Daley told the Scottish Sun that the surgery had given him a new release of life.

UK homes have collectively stockpiled enough paint to fill 20 Olympic-sized swimming pools, claimed research from Dulux and the Community RePaint network.
The paint company and Community RePaint work together to recover and redistribute unwanted paint to community projects across the UK.
According to the British Coatings Federation, 50 million litres of paint are wasted every year.
