93% of tradespeople admit that running their businesses stresses them out, more youngsters apply for CSCS cards, and two electricians evolve into entrepreneurs
Ninety-three percent of tradespeople say running their own business stresses them out — that is according to research from Installer.
The poll also revealed that payment and cash flow were major headaches for sole traders. On average, respondents were owed nearly £6,000.
Tradies also spent nearly five and a half hours a week on paperwork, and more than half claimed they hadn’t taken a week’s holiday in the last 12 months.
Despite the job pressures, over half of those surveyed felt confident about the year ahead.

The number of CSCS cards issued to workers under 25 years old has risen by nearly 9% between 2023 and 2025.
Young workers now account for 19% of all CSCS-logoed cards issued.
The increase wasn’t just people coming on site as labourers, either. The figures showed nearly a 10% growth in skilled roles.

Two electricians who met while working for Swansea Council have patented an induction-based process for fitting lightning protection systems.
The system developed and tested by David James and Ross Miller in a shed will make bonding safer and more consistent, and reduce carbon emissions.
Miller said they never set out to become entrepreneurs; they were just “trying to solve a problem” at work.
