Andy Burnham unveils £1bn Manchester investment plan, government pledges £3.6m suicide prevention strategy and a beekeeper steps in after roofers uncover huge hive
Manchester’s mayor Andy Burnham has unveiled a £1 billion plan to regenerate the city.
The initial £400 million of investment, which is due for sign off this week, will deliver 3,000 homes and 2 million sq ft of workspace.
The first wave of money will focus on revitalising the region’s town centres, with investment going to Oldham, Wigan and Victoria North, one of the government’s planned new towns.
At the start of November, the government said it intended to give mayors outside of London greater influence over the affordable housing programme.

The government has pledged £3.6 million over the next three years to support suicide prevention projects in local communities.
The money is a key part of a Men’s Health strategy unveiled by Health Secretary, Wes Streeting.
The Premier League’s Together Against Suicide initiative will also be backed by a new government partnership.
Suicide is one of the biggest killer of men under 50.

A beekeeper came to the rescue of a team of roofers in Thorverton near Exeter, after they accidently uncovered a massive winter hive that was home to over 20,000 bees.
Caroline Taverner was urgently called to site to re-home the colony.
She even lent the tradesmen a couple of bee-suits so they could finish the roof before the rain came in.
