AUDIO NEWS: Lighthouse Charity launches urgent appeal and half of homeowners don't check tradespeople's qualifications

Lighthouse Charity launches emergency appeal for £200,000, a quarter of Gen Z's hire tradespeople based on their appearance, and a window cleaner puts out a roadside blaze

The Lighthouse Charity has launched an emergency appeal for £200,000 to ensure it can continue to meet increased demand for its services.

Since the start of the year, the charity has spent over £4.3 million, as the number of families reaching out for support has jumped by 51%.

Between January and July, it has funded over 7,000 counselling sessions and delivered 8,000 meals to people in need.

A spokesperson said the construction workforce was battling relentless cost increases in materials, housing, fuel, food and energy, all while working long hours and in often challenging environments.

A quarter of Gen Zs and millennials trust tradespeople based on their appearance rather than their qualifications — that’s according to a survey published for Gas Safety Week.

The poll of 2,000 homeowners also found that 23% assumed a tradesperson was qualified because they had a branded van.

And more than half admitted hiring someone without checking their credentials.

A fire station in Devon heaped praise on a local window cleaner after he stepped in to tackle a blaze on his way home from work.

Andy Bragg stopped beside the road after he’d noticed an “expanse of smoke and fire”.

The 64-year-old former reserve firefighter used his window-cleaning kit to put out the flames.
