Working for friends and family costs tradespeople £550 a year, bricklayer gets stung 40 times after disturbing wasp nest and roofer to run from Paris to Haywards Health for charity

Helping friends and family costs tradespeople over £550 a year – that’s according to research from Tempcover.

In the survey, one in six tradespeople claimed that unpaid and discounted work cost them more than £1,000 a year.

Despite the mounting costs, over two thirds of respondents said they helped out friends and family at least once a month, 

While nearly 20% claimed they did discounted work at least once a week.

Just 1% said they refused to offer any freebies for mates and family.

A Kent bricklayer was stung 40 times after disturbing a wasp nest in an old tree stump.

Paul Durso from Gillingham had been preparing a garden before a starting a wall when he unearthed the nest.

The 53-year-old bricky said he hadn’t noticed anything out of the ordinary until around 250 wasps “just swarmed out”.

Despite the attack, Durso didn’t go to hospital. He just returned home and took some antihistamines.

A 32-year-old roofer is running from Paris to Haywards Health to raise funds for mental health and addiction charities.

Jordan Stokeley flies to France with his two running companies at the end of the month before beginning the 300km journey back to the UK on the 1st September.

The trio, who will raise funds for Turning Point and Mind, are due in Haywards Health a week later.
