Groundworker left heartbroken as van and tools stolen, a third of Bagnall's apprentice intake is female and housebuilder sponsors hockey player

A groundworker was £23,000 out of pocket after his Mercedes van and tools were stolen last weekend.

Nigel Gordon of R12 Groundworks had left his van and tools in a locked compound on a crematorium site in Worcester.

As well as the cost of the van and tools, Gordon was also hit for the rental of a concrete pump and materials that could not be used due to the theft.

The 58-year-old industry veteran said he felt physically sick when realised what had happened.

Painting and decorating firm Bagnalls is encouraging more women to join the trade.

Growing customer demand for female decorators is behind a gradual gender change in the industry.

In the last year, a third of Bagnalls’ apprentice intake has been female.

The business has also participated in recruitment events at schools and colleges, providing visible role models for young women interested in a career in the trade.

Housebuilder Bellway has sponsored one of its apprentice quantity surveyors, who moonlights as a semi-professional ice hockey player.

Ciaran Wilson balances his career, with studying for a degree and playing for the Oxford Rising Stars.

Wilson who played for Team GB is one of the club captains with the Rising Stars.
