AUDIO NEWS: Government promises £15bn for solar installs and 41% of construction firms fail in last 5 years

Government committees £15bn to roof top revolution, 41% of construction firms closed in last five years, and painter decorates home of grieving mum for free

The government has pledged to invest £15 billion to triple the number of homes with solar over the next five years and lift one million people out of poverty.

In the long-awaited Warm Homes Plan published yesterday, £600 million has been set aside for low-income households to cover the full cost of solar panels and batteries.

The plan also extended the Boiler Upgrade Scheme for another year to 2029/30.

But insulation funding was cut after the ECO scheme fiasco.

Despite the raft of grants, average households are still likely to face additional costs when installing green tech.

More than 40% of construction businesses have failed in the last five years — that’s according to research from Witan Solicitors.

The study of Company House data between 2021 and 2025 showed that 43% of domestic builders closed.

Firms building bridges, or tunnels had the highest failure rate, with over 70% going into administration, liquidation or dissolved.

Qarrar Somji, solicitor advocate and director at Witan Solicitors warned that there were “very few signs” that business pressures will ease in the short term.

A painter stepped in to support a mother after the loss of her son.

Danny Campbell repaired walls and painted the half-decorated home free of charge to create a peaceful environment for the grieving mum.

Campbell told the local paper he was hoping to “spread a bit of positivity and encourage kindness”.
