AUDIO NEWS: Construction output continues to fall and social media inspires youngsters to join the trades

Construction out falls by 2%, social media inspires youngsters to look at trade careers and a scaffolder plans to walk 1,200 miles for Andy's Man Club

Construction output has continued to fall at the start of the year — that’s according to the latest government figures.

Output fell in three months to January by 2%, as the wet weather and the business confidence caused work to stall.

New work saw the biggest drop, falling by 3.2% over the three months, while repair and maintenance activity also edged down.

Social media is inspiring the next generation of tradespeople, claims research from Barratt Redrow.

The poll of 13-to-28-year-olds found that 58% were now watching DIY and building content online.

Of those surveyed, nearly half said they were more likely to choose an apprenticeship over university, while 37% said they were driven by a desire to earn money from day one.

Chris Bailey, who works with the housebuilder said social media made careers in the trade “real and relatable”.

A scaffolder from Sheffield plans to walk 1,200 miles to raise funds for mental health charity Andy’s Man Club.

Jordan Darby, credits hiking with helping to turn his life around, after being jailed for 32 months for arson.

The 39-year-old now plans to take 60-days to trek from Land’s End to John O’Groats, staying most nights in a tent he will carry with him.
