Construction output grows by 0.2% in July, tradesman escape without injury after lightning hits nearby building and Sparks Learner of the Year opens for entries
Construction output grew by just 0.2% in July — according to the latest government figures.
The modest increase was driven entirely from a 0.3% boost in new work, as the repair and maintenance output stood still.
Over the last three months to July, construction output has shifted by just 0.6%, highlighting the sluggish growth across the sector.
Clive Docwra, managing director of property and construction consultancy McBains, told Construction Enquirer that while there was underlying confidence in the medium-term growth outlook, “many firms will still have to navigate the headwinds of uncertainty over the next few months.”

A band of tradesmen were lucky to escape without injury after lightning struck a nearby building.
The group were sheltering in their van in Liversedge, West Yorkshire when lightning sent masonry toppling onto their vehicle.
Anton Edwards, who rents the building, estimated the storm caused nearly £30,000 of damage. He told the BBC “We’re all fine, so that’s all that matters.”

The annual event, which is open to Level 2 and 3 electrical students and apprentices, has expanded to include a Scottish heat for the first time.
Winners from the seven regional heats will advance to the final in May next year, where they will compete for national recognition and a prize bundle.
