Prime Minister Andy Burnham has announced a crackdown on ‘cowboy’ builders.
Next month the government will introduce a scheme, developed by the furniture and home improvement ombudsman, to help customers identify and hire trusted builders.
Businesses that sign up to the ‘approved code’ system must be able to demonstrate they can meet higher standards.
A separate ‘Trusted Payments’ system was also unveiled to offer customers better protection for their money during building projects.

Over 70% of tradespeople would consider switching to an electric van, claims a survey by Farizon.
Interest was strongest among tradies aged between 18 and 24 years, with 85% saying they would make the shift.
The poll also identified strong regional support for electric vans in Wales and London — both areas with a relatively high concentration of public EV chargers.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, half of the electricians surveyed said they would “definitely consider” making the leap to an electric van.
