A construction GCSE could be on the cards from 2029, after a shake-up of the education system was announced last week.
Education secretary Lucy Powell unveiled plans for several vocational GCSEs, saying there was a huge demand for courses with a more practical approach.
The courses will be designed to allow teenagers to progress at 16 to study similar courses at college, including new V-levels and T-levels.
Although the industry broadly welcomed the news, the CIOB called for a firm commitment and a proper consultation process.

The UK needs to accelerate development of its heat pump workforce if it is to match the government’s ambition for low-carbon heating, claims training provider GTEC.
Despite continued support through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme and subsidised training, MCS figures indicate that certified heat pump installations fell by 17% in the first six months of 2026.
According to GTEC, funded training gives heating businesses an opportunity to build skills before market demand accelerates.
