28% of consumers experience a problem with repair and maintenance work, two workers die in separate falls from height, and electricians discover 800-year-old tunnel
Nearly 30% of consumers who used a ‘tradesperson’ to complete work at their home experienced an issue — that’s according to a report from Citizens Advice.
The body received around 37,000 complaints last year related to home maintenance and improvement work, making it one of the largest sources of customer dissatisfaction.
The FMB said the report added fresh weight to calls for a mandatory licensing scheme for builders.

Two workers died on consecutive days last week after falling from height at building sites in London and Birmingham.
The incidents occurred just days after the Health and Safety Executive reported that 25 construction workers died in accidents in Britain in 2025/26.
Although the total was down from 35 fatalities the previous year, construction remains the deadliest sector.
Overall, falls from height continue to be the biggest cause of fatal injuries across all industries.
