WWII Enthusiast Admitted To Hospital With Mortar In Rectum. Bomb Squad Called

Posted: Thursday, December 9th, 2021

Patients at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital witnessed a truly remarkable scene last week after a bomb squad was called in to handle a patient who had something dangerous lodged up a place it shouldn’t have been.

Doctors were baffled when a man came in to the A&E and told them he had a 57mm WWII mortar shell inside his bottom - with the munition well and truly stuck up there.

Now the obvious question you’re asking yourself - How did it get stuck up there?

“I tripped while doing a clear out” was the official (and slightly suspicious) excuse given by the man who describes himself as a military enthusiast.

As reported by Gloucestershire Live, Troops from 11 Explosive Ordnance Disposal Regiment rushed to the Gloucester hospital after being notified by police "that a patient had presented with a munition in his rectum.”

The 57mm mortar round was used by the Royal Artillery in the Second World War as anti-tank rounds, though it would later also be used by British tanks in North Africa.

A spokesperson for Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust said: "We can confirm that the police and Explosive Ordnance Disposal team (EOD) attended Gloucestershire Royal Hospital yesterday.

"As with any incident involving munitions, the relevant safety protocols were followed to ensure that there was no risk to patients, staff or visitors at any time.”

The man is going to make a full recover.
