For Mark Radcliffe - the founder of online bathroom retailer Victorian Plumbing - last week will probably go down as the best week of his life. After floating the business he founded in a garden shed in 1999 on the stock market, the value of the company officially became worth £1bn after its share price jumped on its debut. Not a bad Monday right? For the past 20 years, Victorian Plumbing has become one of the largest retailers of branded and in-house designed bathrooms and accessories but it started with some very humble beginnings. A family business through and through, last week’s result has ensured that both his parents and brother, who have all been heavily involved in the company from its start, should be set for life with some eye-watering pay packets coming their way. Parents Carole and George sold £12m worth of shares and still have a 3.3% holding. But after the business's share price jumped on its stock market debut, the value of their remaining stake has surged. Reflecting on the incredible success and milestone of the company, Mark expressed just how important the support of the family was in the process , “I could never have achieved what I have without the support of my parents and the hard work of my younger brother, who is the most valuable asset in the entire business. “At the onset he was a shelf stacker at Morrisons in the evenings, and worked for me in the day because I could not afford to pay him for six months.” Mr Radcliffe has a history of success in the entrepreneur world - at the age of 30 he became the first UK resident to become an eBay millionaire through his mobile phone accessories business, First2save. In just over 21 years, Victorian Plumbing has grown to employ more than 500 people spread across 7 UK locations. (H/T Manchester Evening News)
