New Study Finds A Quarter Of Van Owners Had Tools Stolen In Past 12 Months

Posted: Friday, October 1st, 2021

A new piece of research published by Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles (VCV) have found that a quarter of the tradespeople and van owners they spoke to (27%) had tools or pieces of work equipment stolen from their vehicles in the past 12 months.

The alarming statistic comes off the back of police figures showing an average of 20,000 claims of tool theft are reported to police forces in the United Kingdom each year, with this figuring steadily climbing as the issue continues to get worse.

Some within the sector say this figure is still far off representing the true reality of the crime, with many tradespeople not bothering to report stolen tools due to the low success rate in having them returned and reimbursed.

Breaking down the report from VCV and the tradespeople who were surveyed, areas that suffer the worst tool theft rates were:

  • London (55%)
  • West Midlands (33%)
  • North East (28%)
  • North West (25%)
  • East Anglia (23%)

Speaking to Regit, David Hanna, Head of Sales Operations at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles said “Tool theft is a massive problem for tradespeople with thieves targeting vans parked up overnight across the country.”

“It not only costs van drivers millions in buying new kit, but also impacts their ability to do their jobs, further impacting their finances. We’re urging people who own expensive equipment to take extra precautions to deter would-be thieves, whether that’s removing items overnight, adding extra security measures, or avoiding parking in unlit, secluded areas.”
