To celebrate the notoriously unofficial holiday celebrated by cannabis users all over the world on April 20th - or 420 - a cannabis activist in New York City made headlines after his pro-vaccine stunt caught attention, with thousands turning up to take advantage of the offer. ‘Joints For Jabs’ was the brainchild of 74-year-old Dana Beal, a long-time advocate for the decriminalisation of marijuana use. As the name suggests, members of the public who turned up in New York’s Union Square on Tuesday and could prove with documentation that they’d had their COVID-19 vaccine were given a free joint. In comments made to the New York Post, the charismatic activists pointed out that, ”Krispy Kreme is giving away donuts [for those with proof of vaccination], the least the medical marijuana movement can do is take a stand up for science”. Social media was full of posts showing the big crowds that turned up, with people wearing masks and lined up around the block trying to get their share to celebrate the day. Reports suggests that the organisers of the event came prepared with more than 4000 joints given away in total. It's worth noting that the whole stunt was completely legal as well, as new legislation signed into law on March 31 means New Yorkers are legally allowed to possess up to 3 ounces of cannabis outside the home — and can smoke it in public where smoking tobacco is permitted.
