Construction workers currently converting the historic Bethel Chapel into a new entertainment venue in Sheffield have discovered an 83-year-old note written by the foreman of a plastering firm, who rolled it up and left it in a wall cavity in 1938. The discovery was made by employees of Henry Boot Construction, with the note containing a list of names of the men that originally undertook the plastering work. The note said ‘The plastering of this building was carried out under the supervision of John Woodhouse Foreman plasterer for Bradbury & Sons in the months of August and September 1938’. Builders discover letter written in 1938 hidden of wall cavity of chapel they're renovating in Sheffieldhttps://t.co/Xoj8VZVIG2 As reported by the Yorkshire Post, operations manager Ian Gresser: “At Henry Boot Construction we are extremely proud to be working on flagship projects in our home city and we always take our responsibility to protect any findings very seriously. “To uncover an old letter or artefact is always an exciting moment, but it’s particularly special to find something directly linked to the construction industry.” As a tribute to the tradesmen of the past, the current employees of Henry Boot Constructions returned the note to the wall cavity and included their own list of men working on it today, in the hopes that perhaps another 80 years will lapse and another group of construction workers will discover it. So, adding our own letter to the capsule and contributing to the story of the area means a lot to the team. It’s nice to think that people may read our letter alongside the Bradbury & Sons letter in another 100 years.” (H/T Yorkshire Post)
