The Federation of Master Builders (FMB) has slammed the growing tool theft crime wave as “unacceptable.’’ Appearing on The Clive Holland Show during Anti-Tool Theft Week, FMB chief executive Brian Berry said, that the trade body is campaigning for the creation of a centralised database of tool serial numbers. “Tool theft has been getting worse, so the Federation of Master Builders has been advocating that the serial numbers of tools be listed, so they can be tracked,” he added. Berry also said the construction sector needs to talk with tool manufacturers about embedding ‘tracker chips’ into product designs to combat rampant theft from vans and onsite. “The amount of money that is lost, the amount of days that are lost to not working… something needs to be done to stop it. Tracker chips sounds like a perfect solution,” commented Berry. “The industry needs to be talking to product manufacturers saying ‘look, you need to be supporting the industry,” he added. Figures from Direct Line released in October, indicate that £46 million worth of tools have been stolen from vans since April 2021. Berry urged all tradespeople to ensure they protect their tools through additional insurance.
