CITB and CIOB have thrown their weight behind an initiative to clamp down on modern slavery. Stronger Together, a modern slavery awareness organisation has launched a SOS hand signal for exploited workers to use when they are unable to speak out. The construction sector has been identified as a ‘high risk’ for modern slavery by various organisations, including Gangmasters and the Labour Abuse Authority. According to Pamela Zielinski, construction programme, Stronger Together, the hand signal is the only chance the many exploited workers will have of being able to communicate their situation. There are growing fears that modern slavery is on the rise in the construction sector. “In the post-Brexit and post-pandemic period, there are many in construction with concerns that modern slavery may be on the increase so anything that might provide a route to support or safety for victims is welcome,” said CIOB chief executive, Caroline Gumble. “It’s also a useful opportunity to remind industry professionals of their role in helping to combat the problem and the signs of modern slavery to look out for,” she added. Last year Construction News said there were 57 cases with 209 potential victims of modern slavery reported to the modern slavery hotline operated by charity Unseen. Just last month 13 men were arrested after a joint investigation be the Met Police and its Romanian counterparts. The men were suspected of trafficking unskilled labour on to sites in London.
