AUDIO NEWS: Mates in Mind normalises mental health chats and Employer Networks supports 50,000 learners

Posted: Friday, May 9th, 2025

With Mental Health Awareness Week, starting today, Mates in Mind is looking to normalise conversations around work related stress, depression and anxiety.

Despite over 770,000 workers suffering from work-mental health issues, only 6% of men and 4% of women said they would discuss it with their boss.

Sam Downie, managing director of Mates in Mind said that by encouraging discussion around mental health, employers can empower their staff to seek the support they need.

A report by IronmongeryDirect released last week, suggested that over 50% of construction workers suffered from work-related stress, at least once a week.

Construction output dropped for the fourth consecutive month in April — that’s according to the Construction Purchasing Manager’s Index.

But building firms remained optimistic about their business prospects for the next 12 months, with over 40% predicting a rise in output.

Just 18% said they expected the market to decline.

Tim Moore, economics director with S&P Global said: “Output levels continued to slide in April, but the rate of decline eased to its slowest in three months.”

CITB’s Employer Network programme has supported over 50,000 learners in its second full year.

Between 2024 and 2025, over 4,000 businesses joined the initiative, which offers training and financial support to employers.

For over 30% of construction employers, finding suitable staff remains their key challenge.
